COBRA5485
ColdFire Module with the Size of a Credit Card
Get computing speed, rapidly!COBRA5485 is a credit card-sized Embedded Processor Module based on the Freescale ColdFire MCF5485. The acronym COBRA stands for ColdFire Board for Rapid Applications. The module can be used for a wide range of applications, especially for tasks requiring high computing performance. The ColdFire processor family is the successor of the legendary Freescale (formerly: Motorola) 68000 series and was optimized especially for Embedded Applications. It provides high arithmetic performance at low current consumption. Today, several ColdFire processor derivatives are available; the MCF5485 is one of the most recent additions. It delivers more than 300 MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second), contains a Floating Point Unit (FPU), a Memory Management Unit (MMU) and a large variety of interfaces. The COBRA5485 module contains not only a high-end processor but also a complete set of peripheral functions. The large on-board memory enables the use of powerful operating systems like Embedded Linux. Software Development for ColdFireJust like for the 68000 series, a large number of development tools are available for the ColdFire processors, both freeware and commercial offerings. The widespread GNU tool chain (C, C++ and debugger) supports the ColdFire processors as well. It is available for a number of platforms, including Windows-based PCs. dBug MonitordBug is a traditional ROM monitor/debugger that offers a comfortable and intuitive command line interface that can be used to download and execute code. It contains all the primary features needed in a debugger to create a useful debugging environment, such as edit and display memory, line assembler, disassembler, break points and single step operation. dBug is a resident firmware package for the ColdFire family single board computers. The firmware provides a self-contained programming and operating environment. dBug interacts with the user through pre-defined commands that are entered via the terminal. The COBRA Starter KitThe Starter Kit contains:
LinuxThe new MCF5485 processor contains a Memory Management Unit. With this prerequisite, the processor is capable of running a real Linux operating system with full kernel functionality. We help COBRA5485 users to quickly start with Linux development by offering a special Linux distribution, which contains full support for our COBRA5485 board. Using Linux as an operating system, a number of complex functions can be implemented on the COBRA5485 module easily, e.g.:
Linux for the COBRA5485 can be obtained as an optional software package including a complete Linux tool chain and additional documentation. As development environment we recommend a PC with Linux operating system. |
